Media reports today revealed that FC Barcelona has been compensated by FIFA for the World Cup.
FIFA stops paying compensation to clubs once the player recovers and returns to his team’s training, while the amount that Barcelona will receive will depend on the final diagnosis of De Jong’s injury in addition to the total time he needs to recover and return to group training with the rest of his teammates.
Reports indicate that De Jong will be absent from four to six months and will undergo surgery, which will make Barcelona receive compensation worth at least 2 million euros.
“Sport” indicated that this compensation is based on the club protection law established by FIFA during the month of June 2023, whereby compensation is provided if international players suffer an injury that keeps them out of the field for more than 28 days.
The World Cup is almost over, with Argentina facing Spain this evening in the final of the competition, while England beat France 6-4 and claimed third place.
This law stipulates a maximum compensation limit of up to 7.5 million euros for each injury and for each player, or about 20,548 euros for each day that the player is absent. Compensation is also calculated based on the salary that the club pays to the player as an employee, including social security contributions and does not include bonuses, exceptional payments, and performance or signing bonuses.
This compensation also includes international friendly matches in preparation for continental tournaments such as the Euro, Copa America and the World Cup, while De Jong was injured against Morocco in the round of 32 of the World Cup.
